Siamese Fighter breeding question?

September 10th, 2009
hard to know asked:

I have successfully bred betta splendens roughly about 15 - 20 times. At the start there were a few problems but nothing major , and I learned from that. I have successfully raised between 30 - 50 young fish to a good size before selling them to the pet shop for a very little profit, but its a hobby and I enjoy it. My question is this: The last time ( about 6 months ago) a newly purchased male and female bred or me successfully.I fed them the usual rich foods like earthworm, bloodworm, tubifex and SOME flake food. Everything was fine for a couple of weeks and then the fry began to dwindle. I was left with 4 fish out of roughly 40 and 3 of them have seemed to have developed swolen bellies and have a swimming defect, 1 is 100% perfect, all are females.I’m simply baffled. The parents were both nice sizes and bred perfectly. Would there be a genetic defect in one of them??
Sorry people, I should gave mentioned before, I did feed the fry hard boiled egg yolk and baby brine shrimp, and the tests that were mentioned were carried out.
And the water was at the high level mentioned in one of the answers.
High temperature level , I MEAN, not high water level.

My betta died. :(?

September 4th, 2009
Ghan asked:

I tried so hard to do everything right by him and he still died. Apparently it was chlorine - after a whole 24 hours left to stand, it was chlorine, not ammonia or nitrite or nitrate, that killed him. :( He was fine last night, and then when I woke up this morning he was gone. :( I’m really sad about this. I still want to get other fish, but I don’t think I’ll get another fighter. RIP Caden.

It’s not really a question, I know, but maybe it will serve as warning to new fish owners to always always stand water for more than 24 hours before introducing the first fish. Probably longer due to the nitrate/nitrite cycle thing. Ughh. :( Just a note to Judith - I did use de-chlorinating chemicals meant specifically for Bettas. The bottle does say that you can add the fish immediately after adding the chemical, but most people on this site, in pet shops and Betta sites have said that you should still wait another 24 hours :) I had him in a 30L tank by himself with a filter and heater for about 26C (~78F). Two live plants, a cave to shelter in from the filter current. :( Before that I had him in a much smaller (but still huge by petshop betta cup standards) tank with no filter/heater but 15% water changes every 3 days, and the heat was constantly at about 25-27C (77-80F), because that’s just what room temperature is at the moment. I changed him because it was too hard to clean waste out of the small tank.
I wish I hadn’t, now. :(
The main reason I won’t be getting another betta straight away is that I don’t like the idea of “replacing” pets… if you know what I mean.

Poorly Siamese Fighter/Bette Splendens?

August 31st, 2009
tazinijif asked:

Hi, a week ago I got a 10 gal tank, plants, gravel etc. I added a heater and a filter and treated the water. A week later I bought a silver molly, a black molly and a blue betta. I acclimatised them all properly, floating them for an hour so the water temp matched, then changing a little of their water for a little of the tank water every 30 mins until the water in the bag was nearly all tank water. This process took a total of about 4 hours.I then put the three fish into the tank. The fish were all really active, swimming around, the betta displaying. that night they had all calmed down a and were swimming normally, the betta had even stopped displaying at the other two. The next afternoon the silver molly was lying on the bottom and the betta was floating at the top of the tank, still alive but barely. By 5 the betta had died. The silver molly is still listless and now the black molly is the same. I want to get another betta but I don’t want the same to happen again. Any ideas?

i have a pair of siamese fighter that successfully spawned around three weeks ago. all has gone well up until the last two days when iv noticed a few of the fry lying on the bottom of the tank. Some have died and have been removed. they are still so tiny. iv done some tests on the water, ( amonia, nitrite, ph levels) and all results are fine. iv done a 50 percent water change today but some still seem to be dying…

Can any one Help?

My Siamese Fighther Fish (Betta Splendon) has Vanished?

August 17th, 2009
Subhankar B asked:

Guys,

I am looking for some explanations here, what on earth has happened.

A week back, i introduced 2 Black Ghosh Knife fish into my tank. Moments after introducing some of the primitive natives in my tank (Black Molly(2), Variatus Platy(2) and Gold Gourami (2)), started distrubing the Ghosts by pricking into their tails and all..

Except my Gold fish(2), and Dani Sonii(4), all seem to be quiet unhappy about the Ghosts being introduced.

This phenemenon continued for about 20 minutues, and when I realised that its not going to stop, i fed the fishes, and then everything was normal..they started behaving as if nothing has happened…That night crossed and my ghosts were fine.. I have only two hiding places in my tank and both the Ghosts have occupied that..

Just after a day, I introduced a Siamese fighter (Betta Splendon).. (i generally do not introduce fish this fast.. but this was on order, and colour of the fish was spelndid shades of blue everywhere…if I would not have taken it, somebody else would…)..The fighter was not attacked by anybody and I kept a watch for 2 - 3 hours during evening and everything was fine….

From the next day morning onwards… THE FIGHTER JUST VANISHED IN AIR.. I had searched all corners of the tank, thought it was sharing the hiding place with one of the Ghost but three days have passed by… there is no sigh of the fighter…

I have no explanations.. I have mentioned all the population of the tank above and in addition to that I have two small crocodile fish…

My suspicion is towards the 2 black ghosts I have.. but is this common a black ghost eating up a fighter…?

In short my beautiful fighter has vanished and I am looking for an explanation.. if someone can help?
I have searched all around the tank and its very unlikely that it has jumped… I have no cats in my locality even
